How Is Toffee Made?

Mmm, toffee.

The word alone is enough to incite a flood of anticipatory saliva in our mouths.

You see it, you know it, you taste it, you love it. Gourmet toffee is one of the most delicious, tasty treats known to man. Why is that?

Possibly because it combines all of our favorite elements, including: candy crunch, buttery richness, and of course chocolate.

But while you may know about all of the different types of gourmet English-style toffee — from milk chocolate to dark chocolate to white chocolate — what you may not know is the magical process behind this delicacy.

And since these days we are all a little bit more conscious about where our food is coming from (and rightfully so), we thought it was only right to take you through the process from start to finish.

Whether you want to cook up a batch of toffee on your own, or if you just want to know the gist of how your deliciously perfected Hard Crack Toffee is made, this blog will help you gain a better understanding of all things toffee.

The Ingredients

Of course, the first and most important step in knowing how toffee is made is understanding all of the ingredients that go into making this treat.

We’ll start with some of the basics:
  • Sugar
  • Butter
  • Flour (in some recipes)
  • Almonds
  • Chocolate (can be milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate)

And that’s pretty much it! Or it should be, at least. The best gourmet toffees, like the ones made at Hard Crack Toffee Shop, only use simple and all-natural ingredients.

In fact, Hard Crack Toffee Shop — which is handmade and homemade locally in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — exclusively uses locally sourced ingredients that are all-natural, gluten free, peanut free, and free from additives or preservative. That’s part of what makes our gourmet toffee so finger-licking good.

The Process

There are a few different ways in which toffee is made. From soft crack to hard crack to no crack at all, gourmet toffee tends to come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and textures.

All of that has to do with the process, ingredients, and temperatures that are used during the confectionery creation process.

Surely at this point, you’re wondering which method Hard Crack Toffee Shop uses. Well if our name doesn’t give it away, then it will just have to be an everlasting mystery! At Hard Crack Toffee, we make our gourmet toffee by hand (and with love) in small batches to ensure that our standards of quality and attention to detail are never, ever compromised.

However, we have developed and perfected our own unique twist on the “hard crack” method with secrets that we can’t divulge here. We can take you through a general “hard crack” process, though, in order to help you gain a better understanding of how your favorite English toffee treats are made!

Hard Crack

“Hard crack” English toffee tends to be brittle, crunchy, and covered in chocolate and some form of nut (traditionally almonds).

Here’s how the hard crack process generally looks:

  • Start with a large mixture of butter and sugar. These ingredients are heated until the sugar dissolves.
  • Once heated, then comes the addition of a few other ingredients, which we’ll keep secret for the sake of keeping our gourmet toffee recipe one-of-a-kind. However, you can rest easy knowing that Hard Crack Toffee only uses all-natural ingredients with no artificial enhancers of any type.
  • Once the ingredients are mixed properly, they are brought to a rolling boil (somewhere around 300 degrees) until all that’s left is a gooey, toffee-like mixture.
  • At this point, the toffee concoction (while still heated) can be shaped into its desired form.
  • Once the toffee is uniform and shaped, it is blanketed with a coat of yummy chocolate for added flavor and cooled — giving hard crack toffee that signature crunch that we all know and love.
  • And voila! That’s the gist of how toffee is made.

Of course, even though you know (more or less) how to make toffee, there’s no need to do it all on your own. Instead, you can simply buy the best gourmet toffee online right here at Hard Crack Toffee Shop. Dig in and get addicted!
